English

The permissible concentration of fluoride in water can play a crucial role in preventing dental caries and enhancing bone health. However, when fluoride level exceeds the permissible limit, adverse effects can occur such as dental fluorosis, bone demineralization, and potential impacts on children's cognitive development. Consequently, understanding the mechanisms and hydrogeochemical origins of fluoride in groundwater is critical from both environmental and public health perspectives. This study involves sampling from 48 water wells in Behbahan, Ramhormoz, and Zeidon aquifers in southeast of Khuzestan, during two distinct periods: November 2022 and June 2023. Major ions, bromide, and fluoride concentrations were analyzed to assess the hydrogeochemical behavior of fluoride in the studied aquifers. Various parameter composition diagrams of fluoride concentration and spatial distribution maps were constructed to identify patterns. The results reveal that the predominant groundwater type across these plains is calcium-sulfate, with notable variations in fluoride concentrations between Behbahan and Ramhormoz plains. In Behbahan plain, the highest fluoride concentrations are observed in the western region, whereas in Ramhormoz plain, fluoride levels decrease towards northwest, particularly near Aala River. In Zeidon plain, the central region exhibits the highest fluoride concentration. The bromide-to-chloride ratio (Br/Cl) in Behbahan aquifer suggests three distinct sources for the samples, while that of  Zeidon plain indicates a marine origin for fluoride. Conversely, no marine source was identified for Ramhormoz plain.
